The 5-second VGA DUMMY PLUG - Just passing along info.

First off this of course is not my idea or a new idea BUT....this trick seems to work at least on my Rad HD 6770 cards with ONE 68 resistor in the DVI output slot without the need for 3 resistors on DVI-VGA adapter.

I use it OK with 100 ohms .25 W resistors from Radio Shack. One resistor is enough for a card.

    What i found out :

    - resistor wire is weak (flexible) : be careful the resistor wires don't touch each other nor any other metal surface (risk of short circuit)

    - the main graphic card (upper 16x e) is never put to sleep. Only the other cards need dummy plug in windows.

  • I'm running 3 more modern cards with the latest ati drivers and win 7 with no dummy plugs and everything works fine.  One card drives the monitor, but the others have nothing attached to them.  So, when do the dummy plugs come into play?

  • Guys, are you in early 2011? Never used dummy plugs with anything - HD 4550, HD[56][78][57]0, HD 7[89]50, R270, win7 and Linux, mining since Nov 2011.

Those dummy plugs are not needed for over 2 years now.
